TRANSFER OF HISTORIC LIGHTHOUSE PROPERTY
APPROVED BY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

WASHINGTON, D.C., Mar. 29, 2001: “ The House of Representatives has approved the transfer of 23.6 acres of Coast Guard property at Slip Point in Clallam County, boosting the County's plan to provide greater public access to the marine shoreland," U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks said.

The property includes a lighthouse caretaker's home and buildings associated with the operation of the Coast Guard’s Slip Point Lighthouse Station, which is now operated automatically.  It is a key element in the County's economic development strategy, Rep. Dicks said, and several public use options for the property are being considered.   The land would complement the nearby Community Beach, a 40-acre tract of state and county-owned land.

A similar attempt to transfer the property had been approved by the House late in 2000, but Congress adjourned in December before the Senate had approved the final version of the bill.   Senate approval this year is expected soon, however, Rep. Dicks said.

"This transfer of surplus Coast Guard property will greatly expand public access to the waterfront area, and it will open up a wide range of recreational and educational possibilities to enhance tourism opportunities at Clallam Bay,"  Rep. Dicks stated.
